The brittle star may be coral's best friend
Reef resilience is rarely about one species on its own. Sometimes the most useful ally is the one nobody was watching.
Coral does not survive alone. A reef is a set of relationships, and some of the most important ones involve species that attract very little attention.
Research into the brittle star points at exactly this: an animal easy to overlook may be doing work that helps coral withstand pressure.
For restoration, the implication is practical. If we only cultivate coral and ignore the community around it, we rebuild a structure without the relationships that keep it standing. The reef has to come back as a system, not as a single species.
